The band has only been playing music for 9 months and sent in
homemade recordings just four months after forming last
September. A sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy, Chase Morrin
returned home from the 2008 month long summer program at CalArts
(California State Summer School for the Arts-CSSSA-Innerspark)
determined to start a Latin jazz group. The original group
features Chase Morrin on piano, Daniel Feldman on Congas, David
James on drums, Michael Valentini on bass, and Chris Burgess on
sax. To earn the award, the group played as a quartet with all
Canyon Crest Academy students. They recorded without their horn
player, Chris Burgess and with their good friend, Daniel Oldham on
bass (a member of a trio that Chase and David were in, Minor
Groove). Chase’s original composition and a band favorite,
Whitos Niño’s – 1 earned the award, written in the spirit of
fun and dedication to the band. The tune is still the band's
favorite tune and is now called Whitos Niño’s -2 with their
newest member to the band, Fernando Gomez who plays timbales.
The band is honored and excited to win such a prestigious award
and wants to thank everyone who has shared in their success in
some way; all of the guests and mentors they have had during
concerts. The band continues to welcome guest players to
perform with them! Thank you to CCA musicians who play in
Latin Connection and who helped earn this award with
their superior performance and musicianship! |
